Galleries for Winter Chills and Thrills

Updated: Jan 30, 2019

When the weather is too chilly for gallery hopping Shanghai's art museums or art palaces as I like to call them make the perfect getaway to spend your entire day. Shanghai's modern and contemporary art museums are grand, glorious, and at times hidden with secret wonders vibrating with creative energy. Below are some of my favorite art palaces I like to frequent.

1. The Long Museum at West Bund

"Art is no longer far away from the public but is seamlessly integrated into people's daily lives and leisure" quoted from the contributors of the museum's website. Long Museum is one of my favorite private art museums in Shanghai where I can spend hours wandering through. The Long Museum holds the largest private collection of ancient and modern Chinese contemporary art, as well as, contemporary art from other Asian countries and Europe. Their galleries showcase paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations and more. You can enjoy four levels of creativity winding through this museum. Before you enter you can also store your belongings in their lockers to give you freedom to move in awe. At the end of your stay you can visit their cafe next door for coffee or lunch.

2. Power Long Museum

In Minhang District I discovered a beautiful modern and contemporary art museum when visiting the Korean Abstract Art Exhibition. Powerlong Museum's architecture is modern, chic, clean, and above all else peaceful. When you can find peace in Shanghai trust me it's golden and well it was also a rainy day so maybe that's why there was few visitors. To add to it's chic vibe the entrance tickets are beautiful cards you use to scan in and out of their metro style ticket gates for each exhibition. When you finish touring through the several exhibition rooms you can take a rest and visit their cafe on the ground floor for coffee or lunch.

Hours: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday last admission 5:00 p.m.

3. Power Station of Art

Originally home to Nanashi Power Plant, the Power Station of Art is now home to contemporary art with exhibitions stationed throughout this grand complex of 42 thousand square meters. On the first floor where you can purchase your tickets is usually a small free exhibition open to the public. However, with unique exhibitions stationed throughout this museum I'd highly encourage purchasing a ticket to visit the nooks and crannies of this building. You can end your day at the cafe on the top floor, and take a walk over the extensive patio deck overlooking the Huangpu river.

4. Yuz Museum

This art palace was once an airport hangar, but was remarkably renovated by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. Yuz museum is particularly busy during the weekends as it is located along the West Bund, however, it hosts several renowned exhibitions such as the Charlie Chaplin Exhibition I loved, and the infamous Rain Room. A bonus to this museum aside from nearby galleries and the Huangpu river is the relaxing cafe serving delicious food and beverages for you to sit down and unwind from an afternoon or a day at the museum.

Hours: 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday last admission 8:00 p.m.

Closed on Mondays

5. How Art Museum

Now, it took me a moment to finally make my way to How Art Museum due to it being out in Pudong at the transfer stop for the airport. HOWever, the distance does not deter people from traveling there as I saw a long queue of people waiting for the doors to open in the rain. How Art Museum, hosts several contemporary art exhibitions with some amazing installations great for taking pictures. As well, upon entering the museum they give you a booklet with coupon discounts to eat at the several cafes, and restaurants inside of the building. I'd highly suggest checking out Art Bar, which I'll introduce in a later post.
